Over the last six months I have learnt a lot about myself, my style, what I love to use when I sit down to scrapbook and what I love to scrapbook.
I recently opened all my scrapbooks and went though them....and then threw some pages away........I can hear you gasp! lol.....but there was a reason....I have worked on a ton of design teams over the last few years...near on about 5 years I would say.
Over that time I have had assignments, things I have had to do...products to use, journalling prompts that I had to get onto a page.... To get those assignments done I had to be very selective about what photos I used and whether I had the right ones, the right colours the right amounts to fit into a sketch.
This lead me to a lot of pages, that told no story, that had mismatched photos, ones that didn't belong. I used a lot of photos that had no story...nice photos granted but there was no story there. I even found three pages that used the same series of photos...and on each of them there was no journalling on them at all.
And do you know...the pages that I loved the most where the ones before I started applying to design teams...these are the ones with stories on. The pages that had all the photos on from the event and not ones that just look pleasing to the eye.
There were also pages that had products on them that I didn't like ....big embellishments that I had to use, not that I wanted to use them.
A lesson? yep a big lesson...looking though those albums made me realise where I was going wrong. An example of what I am talking about.....take this page....
yep...this is a recent page....only about a month old..........now I love this page, I love it....several reasons...one because it was the first time that i used chipboard and loved how it looked lol...a silly reason I know but a reason none the less...it had my favourite photos of my gorgeous son on it...it took me a day to complete and I loved all the time I spent on it and enjoyed the process.
BUT........all those photos on this page belong to separate stories...stories that actually I have not yet told....do I regret making this page? nope....but these types of pages now will become less frequent...ones that I will let myself do every now and then. Keep those nice face photos to other things....like a list of what he is into at this moment...or like this page that i made years ago....
I did this one to document some of his things at the point where he was six....notice most of the photos I used are the same as in the page above!!! sigh........something I need to stop doing...I have thousands of photos on my computer to use.
I am starting to re think...about what i am doing and what i want my scrapbooks to say.
Now this page...this is a new page that I have to show you today...one with some fab photos of my gorgeous nephew on them.
Before I would have just wrote a poem or a quote... or most likely to make sure that the journalling fits in the spot that I had left for it...so I would not have said very much.
on this page I printed out the photos that I wanted to use and then the journalling....all the journalling that I wanted to say.
and then I made my page, around all the important things that should be there.
a new way of thinking? for me...yes but not for others I imagine lol....its a new non design team way of thinking and it has been a long time since I have scrapped that way and will take some time to get used to.
Are you still with me???
Ready for a GIVEAWAY?????
okay...I also have realised over the last few months, that I am not an embellishment user...I don't use ribbon...metal embellishments, flowers etc.......they look really pretty, and I am always buying them when I see them, hoping that one day I will use them.
I don't, i like my pages to be flat, i struggle to use anything other than stickers and the occasional brad and button............ I bought lots of Ellie's Studio stuff and my cameo which cuts out all I want........... so what does this mean?
Well it means I have a lot of stuff to give away...and I am going to give it away on here....so I am going to start first with some ribbon...and when I say some ribbon I mean all I have.......I don't use it and it is cluttering up the drawer that could be used for something else....so here it all is.
Interested? well....leave a comment on this post and I will choose a winner....I hate it when people say this is only for certain people, so this is opened up to everyone no matter where you are...there must be some ribbon lovers that read this blog???? I will leave this open till next weekend.
Thanks for letting me drone on today.....I am excited to start on another page. I went boating with my sister and her family today ( I DON'T LIKE BOATS!) and took lots of photos...so I think I will start with them.

Wow, what an amazing post Wendy! I feel like I totally ge what you're saying here and I've also struggled with some projects I had to make for DT things. Sometimes those are my least projects, and sometimes it actually pushes me in ways that help me be more creative. It's all a process I guess and we have to work our way through. I'm glad that you've had your lightbulb moment of sorts and I can't wait to see what you'll be working on next!!
It's great to hear you have found a way that works for you and a love for it again! Lovely layouts.
I love ribbon and would love to have some more!!;0)
Fab post Wendy, and I love your LO and journalling from your new LO. Don't really want the ribbon so please choose someone else, willkeep an eye on what else you're giving away though!
I loved your recent "My favorite Photos" LO! There looks like there is room for hidden journaling like under the special Happy piece on the top left.
I also remember and LOVED your being Six page as well.
I often notice DT pages have no journaling and it is sad...I mean the whole point of scrapbooking is to tell a story, and enhance your pictures! While embellishments are fun and pretty without the story and if the embellies overpower and take away from the pictures they render the page useless!
I have loved your style for a long time. I am a lumpy bumpy layered loving scrapper! Your layering style encourages me to layer my embellies more...like your flowers and journal strips on "Being Six".
I certainly have more than enough ribbon so please don't include me in your drawing (but thank you for the lovely offer)
I just wanted to let you know...I think you could make a silk purse out of a sows ear! Even though you may not have loved those pages you still managed to inspire me at least!! (and I'm sure MANY others!)
I look forward to seeing more of your own style pages-Love your Fun goofy boy" page! :D
very interesting post.... I haven't found my way of creation yet.... but I'm trying hard!!! thank you for your tips and wonderful lo!
;)
I found you through a Pinterest pin. Wonderful blog! I think everything you make should be true to your soul. No need to do things because they are trendy if you don't really like them. Thanks for the chance to win!
I haven't really got into scrap booking yet, I think I find it a bit daunting but glad you have found a way that works better for you. Thanks for the chance to win some ribbon.
I love the Goofy layout too. What a great blog giveaway.
I totally can understand you, I´m lucky you´re back on the blog and you shared your feelings and found your own way...
How freeing! I think there's a lot to be said about knowing your style and sticking only to buying products that match your style. I have the same issue. I have a lot of things in my stash that I will never use. I started purging last week and I have a HUGE box of stuff to giveaway.
PS. I have a ribbon addiction and I actually *do* use ribbon in a LOT of my projects.
One of the best things I've read on a scrapbooking blog! Thanks for sharing! Made me think twice about what I am wishing for...
I LOVE your work Wendy. I always have. And I am happy to read that you have learned what really matters for you. I love the idea of printing the journaling before you start designing your page. I am taking that one with me.
Thanks for all the inspiration!
I love the Being Six layout - that has always been one of my favourites of yous - I loved it when I had a chance to scraplift it for a Scrapology challenge.
What a fabulous pile of ribbons - I am a bit of a ribbon junkie - I don't use them much for scrapbooking but love them for cards.
So good to see you blogging again.

Great post! I understand what you're saying, so good for you for "taking back your scrapbooking". I am always looking for new ribbon to use, usually because I never have anything to match my old ribbon, so I'd love to be entered into the giveaway. Thanks!
Great post and I really appreciate your honesty! I have always scrapped just for me...never on a DT and I have no yearning to be either, I think it would take the enjoyment from a fab hobby. I searched for this blog having loved your work in a recent magazine ...keep up the good stuff
Wendy, you know that I love your work and have for a long time. It makes me want to sit down and scrap and make pretty things. I know exactly what you mean when you say that you can start to feel burned out creating with the same things over and over. I am glad that you are still scrapping.
Found your blog on Pinterest! Lovely work. If your ribbon giveaway is still open, please count me in.~~Jenna
